“We have always been committed to innovation, particularly related to the sustainable use of energy and the protection and enhancement of our territory. Supporting the bark beetle research project of the TESAF and DAFNAE Departments of the University of Padua, together with the initiative launched this year with the Vaia company for the reforestation of one of the areas destroyed by the storm, demonstrates our constant commitment in this sense. These initiatives are a further opportunity to look to the future and actively participate in the challenge of environmental protection, increasingly crucial in a world undergoing great change.”

The project

Let's stop the bark beetle parasite emergency together

The Vaia storm of 2018, which led to the destruction of entire forests throughout north-eastern Italy, had as a serious consequence the proliferation of the bark beetle. This is a beetle naturally present in woods, which feeds mainly on damaged plants. The large availability of woody material present after Vaia allowed the parasite to go from an endemic to an epidemic presence in our territory. With over 8 million trees already dead due to the insect, it is expected that at the end of the epidemic, the damage caused by the bark beetle could even be equal to that of the Vaia disaster. In response to this emergency, the research project on the bark beetle was born, conducted by the Departments of Territory and Agro-forestry Systems (TESAF) and Agronomy, Animals, Food, Natural Resources and Environment (DAFNAE) of the University of Padua. The project aims to finance two three-year PhDs in Silviculture and Forest Entomology for the study of the epidemic phenomenon and new prevention methods and tools.

Fundraising 2023

Environmental Initiatives

In line with its strategic objectives, the University affirms its role in the process of ecological environmental transition and sustainable development, focusing on the future of the younger generations. It is in this context that the two green projects that the University’s donors are making possible fit in: the Bosco degli 800 anni dell’Università di Padova and the research doctorates to stem the emergency of the bark beetle parasite.
